What Triggers Caldera Ring?Fault Subsidence at Ambrym Volcano? Insights From the 2015 Dike Intrusion and Eruption

چکیده
Surface deformation accompanying dike intrusions is dominated by uplift and horizontal motion directly related to the intrusions. In some cases, it includes subsidence due associated magma reservoir deflation. When deflation large enough, can form, or reactivate preexisting, caldera ring-faults. Ring-fault reactivation, however, rarely observed during moderate-sized eruptions. On February 21, 2015 at Ambrym volcano in Vanuatu, a basaltic intrusion produced more than 1 m of coeruptive uplift, as measured InSAR, synthetic aperture radar correlation, Multiple Aperture Interferometry. Here, we show that an average ?40 cm slip occurred on normal ring-fault this (VEI < 3) event, which intruded volume ?24 × 106 m3 erupted ?9.3 lava (DRE). Using 3D Mixed Boundary Element Method, explore stress change imposed opening depressurizing passive, frictionless fault. Normal fault promoted when transferred from beneath one Ambrym's main craters. After estimating compressibility, provide upper bound critical fraction (f = 7%) extracted trigger slip. We infer broad calderas may form part hundreds episodes no greater few meters, result extraction

Pre - eruption deformation caused by dike intrusion beneath Kizimen volcano , Kamchatka , Russia , observed by InSAR
a r t i c l e i n f o Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) images reveal a pre-eruption deformation signal at Kizimen volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, where an ongoing eruption began in mid-November, 2010. The previous eruption of this basaltic andesite-to-dacite stratovolcano occurred in 1927–1928. InSAR images from both ascending and descending orbital passes of Envisat and ALOS PALSAR...
متن کاملSeismic constraints on caldera dynamics from the 2015 Axial Seamount eruption.
Seismic observations in volcanically active calderas are challenging. A new cabled observatory atop Axial Seamount on the Juan de Fuca ridge allows unprecedented real-time monitoring of a submarine caldera. Beginning on 24 April 2015, the seismic network captured an eruption that culminated in explosive acoustic signals where lava erupted on the seafloor. Extensive seismic activity preceding th...
متن کاملPredictability of Volcano Eruption: lessons from a basaltic effusive volcano
Volcano eruption forecast remains a challenging and controversial problem despite the fact that data from volcano monitoring significantly increased in quantity and quality during the last decades. This study uses pattern recognition techniques to quantify the predictability of the 15 Piton de la Fournaise (PdlF) eruptions in the 1988-2001 period using increase of the daily seismicity rate as a...
متن کاملMethods of Volcano Monitoring To Predict Likelihood of Eruption in Long Valley Caldera
Volcano monitoring uses knowledge of volcanic processes and extensive data gathering to analyze areas of volcanic activity. The main goal is to learn the nature of the volcano, the magmatic processes occurring, and the likelihood of a future eruption. Volcano monitoring centers around three aspects of volcanic processes: ground deformation, seismic activity, and gas emissions. These techniques ...
متن کاملSeismic Amplitude Ratio Analysis of the 2014–2015 Bárðarbunga-Holuhraun Dike Propagation and Eruption
Magma is transported in brittle rock through dikes and sills. This movement may be accompanied by the release of seismic energy that can be tracked from the Earth’s surface. Locating dikes and deciphering their dynamics is therefore of prime importance in understanding and potentially forecasting volcanic eruptions. The Seismic Amplitude Ratio Analysis (SARA) method aims to track melt propagati...
